There may be no Three Dog Night in 2021, but one set of dogs showed their bite Thursday night.

The Edmond Memorial wrestling team defeated Edmond Santa Fe 65-15 in the Memorial gym in the first of three Edlam duals.

No. 8 Memorial (4-6) earned maximum points in the first seven matches after collecting four falls in addition to three Wolves forfeits.

Santa Fe (0-5) won three matches, two by fall and one by regular decision.

The highlight of the night for Memorial came at 220. Memorial’s Carston Mower found himself trailing Adley Brawford 9-4 in the third period. He rallied back with a takedown and a 2-point near fall. After allowing Brawford to escape, he took down the Wolf once again to tie the match at 10 before finishing it off with a pin.

Memorial coach Will Delk said comebacks are Mower’s specialty.

“He’s got a lot of heart,” Delk said. “He’s got a gas tank. If guys let him stay in the match, if he gets him in deep water in the third, he usually finds a way to win.”

The dual began with Santa Fe forfeiting at 106 and 113. Blake Sanford and Wyatt Sickles picked up the wins for Memorial. Raider Mackey added to the Bulldog lead by pinning Gavin Horn at 120, then Memorial’s Matthew Garcia did the same against Kaleb Bradford at 126.

Santa Fe forfeited 132 with Jesse Wright accepting the win. John Lee earned another Memorial fall by pinning Elijah Chapman at 138, and Brock Harris did the same against Quincy Hernandez at 145, pushing Memorial’s lead to 42-0.

Santa Fe earned its first points at 152 when Carter North defeated Jordan Cothberson 9-6 in the only match of the night to go a full three periods. Memorial’s AJ Heeg responded with a technical fall at 160 against Will Shoemaker, 19-4.

Brycen Diaz earned Santa Fe earned six points for Santa Fe by pinning Memorial’s Aiden Parson at 170. Memorial’s Ben Mower responded by pinning Sean Sanford at 182.

Santa Fe forfeited one last time at 195, with Cole Carroll collecting the victory. After Carston Mower’s comeback victory, Santa Fe finished strong with Matt Barton pinning Will Morris at 285.

Originally, both squads were supposed to also face Edmond North as part of Three Dog Night. However, both duals involving North have been pushed to Monday to keep crowd sizes limited in the COVID-19 era.
