Just as the buzzer sounded, the ball swished through the net for the second time.

The Deer Creek girls’ basketball team hit two buzzer-beating shots Thursday night during a 74-46 win against Enid at the Bruce Gray Invitational.

No. 15 Deer Creek (5-5) beat the halftime and end of third quarter buzzers with 3-pointers from senior Madie Cooper and freshman Rylee Houska.

Enid (0-5) led 3-2 early in the game but struggled the rest of the way.

Deer Creek coach Alex Moorehead said it took a collective effort.

“We play in such a tough conference, it’s good to finally see some shots go in,” Moorehead said. “Collectively from the 3-point line and layups, they’re all going in tonight.”

Deer Creek played great defense and forced several turnovers on top of numerous offensive rebounds. The Lady Antlers capitalized on the extra possessions as they pulled away for a dominant home win.

“We have a lot of new faces,” Moorehead said. “So, we always try to play up-tempo and get some steals and add some possessions on defense, and tonight, we finally got that.”

Senior Angel Scott led the Lady Antlers with 23 points, followed by Cooper with 14 and fellow senior Allie Hardzog with 10.

Scott said energy is the key for the Lady Antlers for the rest of the tournament.

“We just (need to) keep the same energy we had at the beginning of the game and towards the whole game,” Scott said. “Just keep the energy high and play how we’ve been playing.”

Deer Creek led 22-13 after the first quarter, but Enid responded with a 9-2 run to start the second. The resulting 2-point gap would be as close as the Pacers would get the rest of the night. The Lady Antlers had runs of 8-0 and 10-3 in the second to pull away.

Moorehead said the Lady Antlers are taking this season one game at a time. He said it is good to be able to host a tournament in this unusual season.

“I think everyone kind of appreciates it because you’re back to a little bit of normalcy,” Moorehead said. “I know we’re all wearing masks, but it’s good. It’s good feeling back to normal.”

The Lady Antlers will face Santa Fe South and Sunrise Christian Academy (Kansas) as the tournament progresses.
