Eight minutes of frustration changed everything.

The Oklahoma Christian School girls’ basketball team fell 53-37 to Crooked Oak on Friday night in Edmond after a cold-shooting third quarter.

OCS (2-5) opened the second half with a made free throw, tying the game at 19.

Crooked Oak (11-4) outscored the Lady Saints 17-0 the rest of the quarter.

OCS picked up the scoring again in the fourth quarter, but Crooked Oak’s lead was too great to overcome.

OCS coach Jeff Barnett could not help but laugh as said he wished he knew what happened in the third.

“There was a lid on the basket, I guess,” Barnett said. “They were all pretty dadgum good shots. We ran our offense, moving the ball around, penetrating. Missed some 5-footers, missed some open 3s. Some nights, you shoot it good. Some nights, you don’t.”

The Lady Saints matched their halftime score with 18 points in the fourth quarter but could not get enough defensive stops to make a comeback.

OCS sophomore Hannah Voskuhl led the Lady Saints with 15, followed by fellow sophomore Brenna Rowlett with 10.

Voskuhl, who scored 6 in the fourth, said she got angry at missing in the third and used that to fuel herself.

“I think we were just tired none of our shots were falling,” Voskuhl said. “We weren’t making them, but in the fourth quarter, we did… I just get really mad, and then that drives me to do better.”

The Lady Saints trailed 12-6 after the first quarter but responded well in the second to shrink the deficit to 19-18 at halftime. Senior Emily Orme scored first in the third quarter from the free throw line, but Crooked Oak responded with a 20-0 run. Rowlett broke the scoring drought with a shot early in the fourth.

Barnett said he thought his team played great despite the tough third quarter.

“We make shots, we’re right there where we need to be,” Barnett said. “Did a lot of good things. We never quit. We have intensity, they play hard. Get back in the gym, keep shooting. When the shots go in, we’re going to be pretty darn good.”
