If Karson Fellers shot it, it probably went in.

The senior dominated the court as he led the Oklahoma Christian Academy boys’ basketball team to victory against Stroud on Tuesday evening, 71-35.

Fellers scored 34 points, falling just shy of matching Stroud’s total despite not playing in the fourth quarter.

OCA (5-2) won the opening tip and wasted little time building a big lead. The Eagles began the game with a 16-1 run, with Fellers scoring 7 of OCA’s first 9 points.

Stroud (0-4) warmed up and played a bit better after the first quarter, but the Tigers had no answer for the Eagles on either end of the court.

OCA coach Jeremy Roman said this performance was hard work paying off.

“I thought we had good senior leadership,” Roman said. “Our defense is really what held us together and kind of built the lead. We got a lot of easy baskets in transition because our defense started it.”

Fellers has been OCA’s leader, but he outdid himself in this game by nearly outscoring the rest of his team combined.

Fellers credited those around him for his performance

“The way that Coach pushes me in practice and the players around me let me be able to do (what) I do,” Fellers said. “I was just ready to perform. I came ready.”

With the Eagles leading 53-28 after the third quarter, Fellers and the other starters returned to the bench, allowing younger players and backups to play the final quarter. The reserves outscored Stroud’s reserves 18-7, and the starters on the bench showed their excitement as their teammates hit shots.

“I love it,” Fellers said. “I love seeing young players be able to come out. I see potential in them, and it’s a lot of fun. I like being able to get a lead to have those players come in.”

Freshman Chase Watterson stood out. He scored 7 points in the fourth quarter, all in a row. Although he only played the final quarter, he finished as OCA’s second-leading scorer.

Roman said he sees a lot of potential in Watterson.

“I always like to have freshmen suited out on my varsity, and he came in and he gave us big minutes,” Roman said. “He gave us big baskets. Any time you get varsity points, that is a huge deal. He’s got a very, very bright future.”
