Abraham Aghasedo powered his way to the rim and laid it in for the lead.
The senior’s shot in double overtime Saturday night helped the Edmond North boys’ basketball team join three other area squads in the state tournament.
The Huskies join the North girls, Edmond Memorial boys and Edmond Santa Fe boys as the Edmond representatives.
North faced Northwest Classen in an area tournament consolation title game in the Santa Fe gym. North prevailed 53-44 in double overtime after a dramatic, hard-fought contest.
North coach Scott Norris said he thinks the Huskies’ experience paid off.
“In that second overtime, we got some inside presence,” Norris said. “We did a better job at attacking their zone later. When we got the lead was good because they couldn’t just hold it for a couple of minutes of possession where we had to come out and try to extend our defense.”
Regulation ended with the two tied at 37 after each team scored 2 points in the fourth quarter. The Knights held the ball for over two minutes at one point. North had a chance to win at the end of regulation, but the shot would not go. NW Classen met the same fate at the end of the first overtime.
Aghasedo’s tough shot was the only field goal of the second overtime. All other points came from the free throw line. Once the Huskies took the lead, the Knights had to play from behind but could not get a shot to fall.
North freshman Dylan Warlick led all scorers with 21 points. Senior Dalante Shannon followed with 12, and senior Abraham Aghasedo had 10.
Warlick said he tried to remain calm in overtime.
“Just keep fighting, no matter what,” Warlick said. “Try as hard as you can, give as much effort as you can. That’s all that matters.”
The Huskies will join the Bulldogs and Wolves in the 6A boys’ state tournament. The Bulldogs clinched their spot Thursday by defeating Santa Fe 59-42. Santa Fe rebounded Saturday to defeat Mustang 73-52 at Memorial.
With the Huskies’ win, both North teams are headed to state. The Lady Huskies defeated Midwest City 57-33 Thursday to punch their ticket.
Several other Edmond teams participated in area tournaments but came up short.
The Deer Creek girls saw their season end Saturday afternoon in a 53-43 loss to Putnam City North in Norman. The Lady Antlers started strong and led 8-5 after the first quarter. However, PC North dominated the second 17-5. Deer Creek had to play catch-up the rest of the game.
The Lady Antlers closed the gap to 38-34 with 5:08 to play, but the Lady Panthers retook control and did not let Deer Creek get any closer.
DC senior Angel Scott finished as the leading scorer with 27 points, 15 of those coming in the fourth. No other Lady Antler had more than 6. PC North senior Alyssa Parmer scored 19, followed by junior Kylee Hunt with 16.
DC coach Alex Moorehead said his seniors laid a solid foundation for the future.
“They’re part of Deer Creek,” Moorehead said. “Tradition speaks, and that’s them. They’re never going to give up until the scoreboard says triple zeros, and they didn’t today. I’m proud of them.”
The Memorial girls fell to Sand Springs 50-46 in overtime at Santa Fe Thursday. At the same time, the Santa Fe girls lost 52-48 to Moore in Mustang.
Both Oklahoma Christian Academy teams made it to the final day of area. The Lady Eagles fell to Hartshorne 59-38. Then, the boys dropped a heartbreaker when Howe laid it in at the buzzer to beat OCA 47-45.
Thursday, the Oklahoma Christian School boys fell 54-49 to Star Spencer.
The 6A state tournaments are scheduled to begin March 11.
