Sometimes the smallest of things seem to get out of hand before you realize it. The perfect example of that lies with the email a friend of mine recently sent concerning her adventures while changing the batteries in her smoke alarm.

“The smoke alarm started chirping about 5:30 this morning, continued for about an hour then stopped. Started again at 8:00 and then stopped after another hour or so. It was very dreary outside with a possibility of rain so I got the ladder out of the garage to replace the battery and stop the chirping. Wanted to do it before it started raining.

Ladder up, battery down, but no spare 9 volt batteries (lots of AAA’s, AA’s, C’s, and even a couple of D cells). So ran to the store to buy a 9 volt. Back up the ladder, got the alarm re-armed, and it looked like it wouldn’t rain for a while. Since the ladder was inside and I now had a spare battery I changed Linda’s battery on the other side of the duplex.

As long as the ladder was still inside the ceiling fan blades got cleaned (while I was up there it was apparent they needed to be either cleaned or plowed and planted).

To get to the smoke alarm the TV-entertainment thingy had to be moved - to make way for the ladder. And, since the ladder was already inside, climbed up and cleaned the pictures hanging behind the TV. As long as the entertainment thingy was away from the wall, cleaned the floor behind and under where it went before putting it back (also cleaned the shelves and gee-gaws back there of course).

Since the ladder was still inside, (it wasn’t raining yet) took down the curtains that haven’t been washed in a very long time. With the curtains down - windows looked yucky, soooo, being as the ladder still inside, washed the windows.

Right now its about supper time and the curtains are clean and rehung on sparkling clear windows, the furniture is back in place (well mostly), the sun is shining despite the late hour, and the ladder is back in the garage.

            Darn smoke alarm!”
