As the dawn of the new year bathes Edmond in its promising light, it is crucial to address the lingering issues that continue to cast shadows over our beloved city. Reflecting on the past year, it is evident that certain matters demand our immediate attention and concerted efforts for a brighter future.

One prominent concern is the unfortunate demise of Uncommon Grounds, the envisioned art park, which slipped through our grasp at the eleventh hour. We need to acknowledge the ongoing efforts of Hal French to develop the restaurant sites on the south side of the property, which shows that there is hope. Now it is time for our city to step up to the plate. Let us rally together and make Uncommon Grounds a reality, even if it means utilizing a temporary sales tax to fund the remaining work.

Turning our gaze towards the East Edmond 2050 Plan, adopted by the city council in March 2022, it is disheartening to observe the lack of progress in implementing overlay districts for development guidance. Councilman Josh Moore passionately advocated for these districts, emphasizing their role in expediting the realization of the plan's vision. However, we find ourselves with only a temporary ordinance for the Route 66 area. The time for excuses is over; let us inject vigor into the East Edmond 2050 Plan and hold our city accountable.

Another perennial issue before us is trains obstructing access to downtown from the west which remains a thorn in our side. While the city is working on a pedestrian overpass, now is the opportune moment to redouble our efforts. With the newly appointed Downtown Transformation Manager, let us accelerate this project and ensure the unimpeded growth of our downtown area.

Lastly, the persistent discontent with our city government and school district, though diminished from previous years, lingers. It is imperative for us to foster a harmonious relationship between the city council, school board, and the community. Despite commendable accomplishments in recent years, there is still an underlying tension that needs to be addressed. Let us channel our concerns about broader issues to the appropriate authorities, focusing on fostering unity within Edmond.

As we embark on this new year, let us seize the opportunities before us and collectively strive to make Edmond an even greater place to live and work. By addressing these issues head-on, we can pave the way for a prosperous and harmonious 2024, ensuring a brighter future for all our citizens.
