Joe Biden has been elected as the 46th President of the United States according to the Associated Press.

The AP called the race Saturday after Biden won Pennsylvania, bringing his electoral votes total to 284. A candidate needs 270 to win.

The AP had already called key battleground states Wisconsin, Michigan and Arizona for Biden.

Results in some states were delayed due to the backlog of mailed ballots needing to be counted, causing Americans to wait several days to learn the winner.

The AP has yet to call the race in Georgia, Nevada, North Carolina and Alaska, but Biden has amassed enough electoral votes to win regardless of those results.

The possibility of recounts and challenges remains, but if no states reverse course, Biden will take office January 20.
