The Edmond Board of Education Monday were updated on the upcoming school bond election as well recognizing Site Teachers of the Year, and other recognitions.

Voters are being asked to approve $147 million in bond funds to meet current and future needs of the district. This proposal includes funding for construction of a new elementary and the start of a new middle school among many other projects impacting all EPS students.

“The most important thing is for people to get out and vote,” said Superintendent Angela Grunewald.

In her Superintendent remarks, Grunewald recognized the EPS school board.

“This School Board Appreciation Month,” she said. “There's a certificate in each one of your seats that thank you for all of the hard work, and we will be recognizing a board member every Wednesday on our Facebook page. I just want to thank you and let everyone know the time that you give. It is so much more than just one meeting a month, along with all the reading of the packets, the weekly updates, the committees and the meetings you serve on, it takes us way more time than most people probably realize.”

Grunewald said being a school board member has challenges.

“The emotional energy that you commit to this from being available to people, to hear from them, to listen to people, and to carry the weight of you are responsible for the budget and the policies of Edmond Public Schools,” she said. “That's a heavy weight that every one of you carry and you carry it so well. I just wanted to thank you for all that you do and how well you honor and represent this district in your actions and everything else. Thank you for your time and energy that you donate to Edmond Public Schools.”

In other matters, the school board recognized EPS Band Director Milik Coffer as the OkMEA Young Music Educator of the Year, and the EPS Fine Arts program.

“I have the esteemed honor and pleasure to recognize the astounding achievements of our Fine Arts students and the astounding teachers that formed it,” said Edward Hudson, EPS Director of Fine Arts. “This year, Edmond Public Schools had 98 kids selected to be a part of the 2024 Oklahoma Music Educators Association All-State Band, orchestra and choir. This is a direct reflection of the caliber of the instruction that is happening in our classrooms daily and the outpouring of support of our amazing Edmond community.”
