The Edmond Public Schools Board of Education Monday learned the school district is still in the process of filling several teaching vacancies.

“We are seven elementary teachers short, and three of those are Special Education,” said Superintendent Angela Grunewald. “We still have two middle school openings, and one of those is special ed. And we have six high school openings, and three of those are special ed. Our principals are working really hard to get all of their positions filled.”

Grunewald said the school district is also trying to fill a number of support staff positions.

“The support staff, a lot of times we don't really know until the report date how many openings we even have because a lot of them maybe got a job this summer and they're trying to decide, "Do I want to go back? Do I want to keep this job I had over the summer?” she said. “And so really until the day that they report, and we know they're still coming to work on that first day, is when we really know how many openings we even have in our support positions.”

Grunewald said it has been a busy summer for the school district, and thanked the local Parent Teacher Organizations (PTOs) for their work.

“I want to take time right now to thank our PTO groups,” she said. “I had at least five or six that were out working in flower beds over the last few weekends at several of our schools just to make them look really ready for the first day of school.”
