The Renaissance is headed to Guthrie.
The Guthrie Renaissance Faire is set for May 8-9 at Cottonwood Flats. The Faire will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days. Tickets are $5 per person through May 3. After, tickets will be $10 per person.
The theme is “Let Them Eat Cake.”
John Pagonis, owner of Guthrie Haunts, is organizing the event. He said he is holding it because similar events elsewhere in Oklahoma were canceled.
“Some of my performers at Guthrie Haunts perform at the renaissance fairs, and they wanted a place to perform this year,” Pagonis said. “So, they called me up, and they said, ‘Hey, are you interested in doing a renaissance fair…?’ I said, ‘Yeah, sure, why not?’”
About 30-40 groups are scheduled to perform. The Knights of Canterbury will showcase theatrical jousting, sword fighting, archery and more. Raptor Keep will have a Birds of Prey Show, and guests will be able to get pictures with the raptors. The Medieval Society of UCO will recreate various aspects of the time period.
There will also be Vikings, Scotch Games Demos and more.
There will be both children’s and adults’ entertainment villages. The children’s area will include unicorn rides, a petting zoo, mermaids and face painting. The adult area will have a beer truck, wine vendor, cigar tent, and some additional shows.
While there are many vendors already scheduled, there is still room for more. Those interested should reach out by sending an email to guthrieokrenfair@yahoo.com.
Pagonis said he is also seeking volunteers to help work the event. Anyone interested should email the same address. Include volunteer in the subject line.
“I think it’s going to be interesting,” Pagonis said. “I think it’s going to be a lot of fun, and I think people need it. I think things are going to start opening up. May’s going to be a good time for it.”
Masks will be optional, but social distancing will be required.
