The Edmond City Council Monday voted 3-1 in favor of a sign variance request for Viridian Coffee Company, located at 1433 East Danforth Road.

Ward 2 Councilmember Barry K. Moore voted against the measure while Ward 1 Councilmember Tom Robins was absent from the meeting. The Edmond Planning Commission previously recommended approval by a vote of 3-2.

Viridian Coffee Company owner Shay Hayes requested a variance to allow for two signs to be placed above the roofline at 1433 East Danforth Road, on the northwest corner of Danforth Road and Bryant Avenue.

The Viridian Coffee Company is opening a new location at the kiosk located in the parking lot of the Kickingbird Shopping Center.

“This location in Edmond will be our eighth Oklahoma coffee house,” Hayes said. “We're from Duncan. Back in March I moved here to Edmond to open a new coffee house. The new property owners approached us about replacing Shimmers with a coffeehouse because they heard about what we were doing and our mission is to build community and culture around a great cup of coffee.”

The building design features a clay tile roof band around the building, leaving limited space for any signage. The request is to place two signs in a ‘V’ shape on the roof of the building, adding approximately four feet, three and a half inches of height on the east side. Signs above the roofline are prohibited by the sign code.

Architect Haven Markin said the placement of the signs on the roof helps increase visibility of the business along Bryant Avenue and Danforth Road. The signs are 42.9 square feet in size, which meets the sign allowance for this site.

Hayes said he and the property owners reviewed options for signage placement.

“The only options that we could come to terms with, with the building owner and ourselves was to bring signage above that structure,” he said.

Markin said the signage will be integrated into the building and will include LED lighting.

“We feel like the sign will actually be somewhat integrated into the building and not just be a sign sitting on top,” he said.

The Council approved amending the Visit Edmond Tourism Advisory Board of the Edmond Municipal Code by modifying it to allow high school and college students to serve on the board as non-voting members.

The amendment will allow high school students and college students from the University of Central Oklahoma and Oklahoma Christian University to serve as ex-officio, non-voting members and do not have to be Edmond residents.

“The reason we felt like this was important because in the past it (ordinance) was worded as a youth representative, which kind of assumes 18 and under, but for our board we would like to expand that reach to be a student that's in a college or high school, either at UCO or at Oklahoma Christian,” said Jennifer Thornton, Director of Tourism, Visit Edmond.
