Non-Partisan Elections… Or Are They?

The Edmond School Board election is April 5th . Two hotly contested seats are up for grabs in this
election; perhaps too hotly contested. The school board, just like our city council, is a non-partisan
body. That means it doesn’t matter if you are a republican or democrat, conservative or liberal. These
elections are about the issues; not what way you swing politically.
However, in this year’s school board election, similar to what is happening at the state and federal level,
the mud slinging has gone from the standard name-calling and digging up dirt of the past to one of
sometimes wildly inaccurate and highly politically charged mis-information. Candidates are having to
defend themselves, not on the issues, but about who they are. This is not what our school board
elections are supposed to be about.
Before you go to the polls on April 5th , do your own research. Talk to both candidates in your district.
Go to their websites and Facebook pages and read; not about the other candidate or their political
perspective. That won’t help you make a good decision. Read the candidate’s platform. Try to
understand how much they know about the issues facing Edmond Public Schools. Learn which issues
they are passionate about and how much they truly know about those issues. Also, while doing
research, we suggest that voters should read our previous editorial from January 21, 2022 about our
endorsements to see why we unanimously endorsed Jones and Hobgood.
All of our local elections are non-partisan. We should keep them that way. This is about local issues.
Remember, we are all neighbors. Yes, it has been a tough couple of years. But many of the challenges
thrown in front of us from both the federal and state governments are now behind us. Now is our time
to find the path back. There is a reason our local elections are non-partisan. Let’s find that reason once
more. Do your own research. Focus on the issues, not the rhetoric. And vote. See you at the polls on
April 5th .
