The Edmond North boys’ tennis team traveled to Ponca City High School last week to play in the Ponca City Varsity Tournament, where they left victorious to enter spring break on a high note.

Along with the Huskies’ girls’ team (who won second place), the North boys competed against other Class 6A squads in both singles and doubles brackets at Wally Smith Park. The team pulled out the first-place win over 2023 state champions Jenks and Edlam rival Edmond Memorial, among others.

Levi Solomon got the action started for the Huskies by winning the Boys No. 2 Singles bracket. He defeated Ponca City’s Henry O’Neill in the opening round, then took down Grayson Glenn of Edmond Memorial in the semifinals.

Solomon advanced to the championship round where he picked up Edmond North’s first bracket victory of the tournament, winning 1,1 against Westmoore’s Jonathan Eichman.

The first of North’s two doubles tournament wins came courtesy of Jack Franklin and Cortez Mora. The duo ran the table in the Boys No. 1 Doubles bracket with a win over Jenks’ Cameron/Pensavalle in the championship round.

Wyatt Hague and John Paul Huston picked up the win in the Boys No. 2 Doubles bracket to officially clinch the tournament victory for the Huskies. They won over duos from Southmoore, Jenks, and finally Bartlesville in the final.

Edmond North enters 2024 fresh off of an impressive 2023 season. The Huskies finished as state runners-up in last season’s finale tournament, losing by 10 total points to the Jenks boys’ team. With a win over the Trojans in Ponca City, head coach Duncan Fugitt‘s team should be in prime position to vie for the title come May.

The Huskies will be off for spring break before returning to action to compete in the Enid Varsity Tournament on Monday, March 25.
